Calvin Lewis Obituary

Calvin H. Lewis Jr. son of the late Calvin H. Lewis Sr. and the late Rayolga Lewis was born on February 2nd, 1950, in New Orleans, La. He was one of five children.

While he was still a child, Calvin and his family relocated from Louisiana to New York, where he attended the NYC Public school system and graduated from Eastern District High School. He was a prolific basketball player and earned a full scholarship to Mohawk Valley College.

Calvin enlisted in the United States Navy in 1975 and after serving in the military, he received an honorable discharge. Calvin decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Merchant Marine Seaman. Calvin joined the US Merchant Marines where he sailed and served for 12 years. During his world travels, he studied and converted to Islam, learned to speak Arabic, and adopted the name Mustafa “The Chosen One.”

Calvin was a High-Pressure Boiler Mechanic in the Merchant Marines and used that knowledge and expertise to become a NYC Boiler Inspector and subsequently a High-Pressure Boiler Technician for the Riverbay Corporation in Co-op City, Bronx NY. Calvin retired from the workforce in 2014.

Calvin was blessed with his beloved son Elan prior to meeting the love of his life, Leila Miller. After meeting Leila (Peaches) in 1973, they married five years later, in 1978. During their union of 48 years, Calvin and Peaches were blessed with two loving children: daughter, Jihan and son, Saeed.

Calvin was raised by his parents in the Bushwick Projects, and he was considered by many to be both a mentor and a friend. He was known for his generosity, genuine love and affection for children and faithfully donated to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Calvin was known for his ability to fix anything and would often help family and friends with repairs and provide accurate solutions to their mechanical problems. Calvin was well respected and appreciated by The Moffat St. Association, caring for the cleanliness of his home, their neighborhood and would often be found keeping the block in good order.

On Thursday, September 30th, 2021, Calvin H. Lewis Jr. was at home with his wife by his side, when he peacefully departed this earthly life. He leaves to cherish his memory; his devoted wife, Leila (Peaches), three children: his son Elan Lewis, his daughter Jihan Butler (Jamar), his son Saeed Lewis; four grandchildren: Davon, Janiah, Jalen and Jala; two great-grandchildren: Elan and Zhurii; one sister Juanita Hyman; brother Kenneth Lewis (Patricia); brother Jason Lewis; two Sisters-in-law: Marie Miller and Shirley Miller-G; brother in-law: Larry (Dernice) and a host of aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
