Harold Simmons Sr. was born May 15, 1926, to the late Mack and Hattie Simmons of Hampton, South Carolina. Harold was the youngest of five children born to this union. Three sisters, Alice, Zenobia, Alfair, and one brother Mack Jr., all preceded him in death.
On Thursday, September 14, 2023, God called our loved one to eternal rest.
Harold was educated in the Hampton, South Carolina School System. Upon graduation from high school, he was inducted into the US Military Naval Service. During World War II he served as a Seaman First Class and received the following medals: American Theater, Asiatic Pacific, Philippine Liberation, and the victory medal. He often told interesting stories about the war and of the places he had been, Hawaii, Japan, Germany, and the Philippines.
After the War, Harold, settled in Brooklyn, New York where he had many different careers; He worked in the NYC garment district in many capacities, he was a carpenter, he worked for the New York City Housing Authority and his last job before he retired was with the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Staten Island Ferry.
Harold was fortunate to meet the love of his life, Rosa Blount. They married in April of 1956 and remained married for 56 years until her passing in 2012. To this union they were blessed with four beautiful children, Harold Simmons, Jr, (deceased), Sharon Simmons, Cassandra Simmons Lane, and the apple of his eye Curtis Simmons.
Harold was a learned man who lived a well, rich, long life and reached the ripe old age of 97 years “Young”. He was a family man, full of love. To have known him was to love him. He was affectionately known by “Poppie”, not only to his children, but by others also.
There is much to be said about HAROLD, his interesting war stories, his many careers, he liked to sing, he sung well, he liked to cook, he cooked well, he loved sports and the list goes on and on, but most importantly, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and personal savior!
Harold, “Poppie” leaves to mourn and cherish his legacy, his daughters, Sharon Simmons and Cassandra Simmons Lane, his son, Curtis Simmons, his grandson Kimshaun Williams, his granddaughters, Alicia Starr Simmons and Tayler-Lauren Simmons, his great grandson, Malachi Williams, great granddaughter Summer Davis affectionally known as “SEASON”, daughter-in-love Carol Simmons and, his beloved “watermelon” goddaughter, Ayisha Bennett and a HUGE host of family and friends.
Gone but never, ever forgotten. “Another soldier gone home to be with the Lord.”
