Mary Barnes Obituary

Mary Barnes was born to Carl Rivers and Elizabeth Washington on December 28, 1942 in Lincoln Hospital located in The Bronx, New York. After many medical challenges and setbacks, she departed this life on Saturday, December 12, 2020 in Mount Sinai Brooklyn located in Brooklyn, New York.

Mary received her education in the New York City school system and graduated from Bushwich High School in The Bronx, New York.

In 1959 on June the 20th, Mary accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at New York Ephesus Seventh - day Adventist church in New York City, New York under the late archbishop M. Anderson.

Mary was mild mannered, very generous and respectful, and loved by so many. Mary always took on the leadership role for the family but due to the passing of her parents at such a young age, she took on the responsibility of being a mother and father figure to her younger siblings Carl Rivers, Estelle Robinson and Silvia Rivers and her cousin Gilbert Best. That characteristic continued as she took on motherhood and created her own family. She raised her children and their children and finally proceeded to take on the role of being a great grandmother. She raised four generations and may we continue to represent that love and compassion she had even though she may be now departed.

Mary Barnes was a very hard worker and had a lot of determination to achieve her goals. Although her main concern was taking care of her family she also enjoyed sewing and decorating, cooking meals for her family, preparing family gatherings. We thank her for being so selfless and always putting everyone else’s needs and wants before herself. She was such a strong woman and we admire her wisdom and generosity.

Mary leaves behind her four children John Barnes, Andre Barnes, Deon Barnes and her late daughter Terry Barnes; three daughter in laws Chanda Barnes, Lenora Barnes and Kerri Hazelton; grandchildren Darshane Barnes, Nicholas Barnes, Sherise Windley, Davon Barnes, Tyler Barnes and Darian Barnes and great grandchildren Aiyanna Lanham, and Andrew Lanham. Nieces and Nephews Tina Robinson, Ricky Robinson, Edward Robinson, Mitchell Robinson, Michelle Robinson, Melody Robinson, Michael Rivers, Richard Rivers, Brenda Rivers, Anthony Rivers and Kevin Rivers. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.
