Mattie Nell Rolling was born on January 13, 1934 in Warthen, Georgia to the late Sammie Lee Daniel, Sr. and the late Hattie Mae Chatman Daniel. She was preceded in death by siblings Hattie Mae, Nola, Bobby Lee and Lawson. The Lord called her home on Sunday, January 17th, just 4 days after her 87th birthday.
She was educated in the Sandersville, Georgia school system, graduating from T.J. Elder H.S. in 1953. She had various jobs in Sandersville, before coming to New York in 1956. She married the late Robert L. Rolling, Sr. on July 5, 1958 in Brooklyn, New York. They were inseparable until his passing; now they are together eternally, praising the Lord.
Once in New York she was a homemaker before being employed by the New York City Education system as a para-professional, working at P.S. 150, P.S. 396, and Marcus J.H.S. 263 before retiring. As she developed her career in education, she attended Touro College in the School of General Studies, obtaining an Associate in Arts Degree in 1985.
Under the spiritual leadership of Archbishop Roy E. Brown, she attended services as a member at his multiple locations including the current Pilgrim Church before Archbishop Brown opened a church in the community of Brownsville, Brooklyn, NY. There she joined the membership under Bishop William A. Martin at the Pilgrim Cathedral of Brownsville (PCB) in 1990. She served the ministry as the Hospitality President, where she was one of the first people to greet you and welcome you to the church. In later years, she was a member of the Mothers Board. Their assignment was to pray for the membership of the church and the Bishop. Finally, she became the Church Mother, celebrated by the congregation as the oldest member of the church. Members of PCB continually supported her, honoring her on her birthday, Mother’s Day and other occasions. Calls from the members all said the same thing about her: she was so sweet, had a gentle spirit, always giving encouragement and always showing love.
She lived a full and fruitful life. Even while she was going through, she kept saying, “God is so good and so worthy to be praised. I give him all the glory.” Her children were able to wish her a happy birthday and were with her until the end.
She leaves cherished memories to her devoted children, Denise A. Rolling and Robert L. Rolling, Jr. (NY); two daughters, Davida Hooks (PA) and Teresa Wallace (NC); one daughter-in-love, Diane L. Rolling (NY); three brothers, Sammie Daniel Jr., Jacko Daniel and William Daniel; one sister, Betty Daniel, all of Georgia; 9 grandsons; 5 granddaughters; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; 13 nephews; 5 nieces; Church Family of Pilgrim Cathedral of Brownsville, a host of other relatives and friends. She will truly be missed but we know she is in God’s care.
