Obituary
Reginald Darnell Small Sr. affectionately known as Darnel was born on July 17, 1955. He was the eldest son of Dennis and Rosa Small. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Wayne Gray Small, Greg Small Sr, sister Joyce Small and sister in-law Charlotte Sumpter. Reginald was educated in the NYC public School System. He graduated from Tilden High School in 1973 where he grew fond of his favorite sport, baseball. He continued his formal education at Brooklyn College from 1973-1975. In October 1978 Reginald Small Sr. married Julia Ridgeway and during this union 3 children were born. He later met Reatha Jenkins and conceived twin sons.
Reginald’s career began in 1975 where he worked for the social security office until 1980. He finished his career working as a train conductor for New York City Transit where he dedicated 19 years of service. Darnel had a zest for life. He had a love for music and was known for spinning the records at family celebrations and gatherings. He loved celebrating life and had a passion for sports. He played minor league baseball for various teams throughout Brooklyn and loved to referee and coach as well.
Reginald departed this life at Interfaith Hospital on the afternoon on September 6, 2022, after a long battle with chronic health illness. He is survived by his ex-wife and devoted caregiver Julia Small-Jones, his children Reginald (Patricia) Small. Jr of Charlotte, NC. Julian Small of Charlotte, NC. Tieesha Small of Lithonia GA. Derrick Small of Brooklyn, NY, Eric Small of Brooklyn, NY and stepdaughter Lakeesha (Lester) Bailey of McDonough, GA. He also leaves behind his Brother Derrick Small of Louisburg NC, two sisters Tonya Smith of Brooklyn, New York, and Kim (Hilary) Tomilson of New Jersey. Two sisters in law Shirley Ridgeway of Brooklyn, New York and Autherine (Charles) Williams of Lithonia, GA. He leaves a beautiful legacy of 14 grandchildren Matthew, Kaliayyah, Emani, Makaili, Kayla, Kimora, Mehki, Maurice, Kourtney, Michael, Laquia, Zhakira, Joshua, and Elijah. 2 great-grandchildren, his devoted friend Roberto Gabriele of Brooklyn, NY and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
