On June 28, 1942, in Carven County, North Carolina, God saw fit to bless the late Eddie and Cora Cox with the life Sarah Lee Cox. At an early age, Sarah accepted her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and was baptized at the Alum Spring Church of Christ Disciples of Christ.
She received her formal education through the Carven County Public School System. After graduating from New Bold High School in May 1960, she married Elias Brown on August 12, 1960. Shortly after matrimony, they migrated to Brooklyn, New York.
Sarah's union to Elias yielded three children, Michael (Pepi), who preceded her in death; Ronda and Deon Brown. Sarah was later blessed with another son, Gregory.
On April 13, 1972, Sarah accepted a position with the New York City Human Resource Service- from which she retired after 26 years of faithful and dedicated service.
Sarah loved her family dearly. She always put our needs above her own. She enjoyed taking care of her children and grandchildren along with her Fort Greene Family. She has made an unnumerable number of friends and countless adopted children in Fort Greene and throughout New York. She became affectionately known as Mommy, Sa, Nana Brown, or Momma Sarah just to name a few.
Sarah was always a pleasure to be around. She exhibited a good and positive attitude and mood. To know Mommy is to love Mommy. She was a delight to us and had a helping hand for everyone. Her door and ears were always opened along with her encouraging words and hot meals to make everyone to feel welcomed.
