William Louis Battle, Sr. was born on April 18, 1953 in Rocky Mount, NC to the late Louis E. Battle and Mary L. Battle. He departed this life on April 29, 2021. William’s parents migrated to New York City in 1963 and over the years the family lived in various communities such as East Elmhurst, East Harlem, the Bronx and ultimately the Corona neighborhood of Queens.
During his early childhood years in NC, William especially loved playing outdoors with his cousins (The Stevenson Boys) and friends. However, his favorite cousin was Bernard and those two were an inseparable pair. They were very creative and used to make horses out of old broom sticks or small trees they cut down in the woods. They also played marbles, rode bikes and got into mischief which resulted in some unwanted discipline.
William was educated in the Rocky Mount and NYC Public School Systems. As a young teen in NYC, he enjoyed playing basketball and was also a member of a neighborhood Steel Band team.
On June 26, 1971 William married Claudia Craig; and were the were the parents to three children, William Louis Battle, Jr., Latisha Gail Battle and Tawana Michelle Craig.
William enlisted in the US Army in 1973, where he served for ten years until he was honorably discharged from the military. While in the service, William specialized in technical communications and would often share with his younger brother how the work he did was integral to many of the militaries field activities. It was also during his time in the military that William made a public confession of faith in Christ and accepted Him as his Lord and Savior. After serving this nation and returning to civilian life he began working in the field of transportation where he drove commercial trucks and buses. His CB handle was “Master”. William just loved the freedom of being on the open road.
He was a member of Pilgrim Church in Brooklyn, NY, under the leadership of the late Archbishop Roy E. Brown. He was employed there for a few years and utilized his technical skills in the audio/visual ministry and he also drove buses.
